âHow was your day, boys?â Susan asked Adin and Cody over dinner. They had walked in a few minutes earlier looking dirty and beat up. Sheâd sent them to the bathroom to wash up while she set the table, and now they were all sitting down to eat. It had been a long time since theyâd had this kind of normalcy in their lives, but she was grateful for the renewed energy sheâd received this past week.
Adinâs eyes became bright, his eyebrows arching up. âIt was great. I really like working with Andy. Heâs made this week go by so fast! And today, Tim showed up after lunch to help us. I started getting really hungry, and he pulled out a couple of candy bars for Cody and me. It was so nice.â
Susan smiled at her sonâs excitement. She hadnât realized how much of the heaviness sheâd been carrying had been due to the fact that sheâd had so many outstanding debts and been so overwhelmed by the ranch finances. Now that sheâd pay off all the hands sheâd owed money to, and gotten their accounts current, she felt like she could breathe again.
âWhat about you, Cody? Have you been enjoying your time with Andy as much as Adin?â she asked.
Cody rolled his eyes. âI donât think anyone enjoys anything as much as Adinâ¦but yeah. Itâs been cool. Timâs been cool too, actually. He said I can have next week off for football camp like we talked about. Said heâd even drive me every day so you donât have to.â
Susan suppressed her smile this time. She didnât want Cody to know she was so pleased with his admission about Tim. He was a nice guy, with a kind, honest heart. The more time Susan spent around him, the more sheâd grown to trust him. Having both of her boys say nice things about him meant the world to her.
âThatâs great,â Susan said.
âYeah. Did you know Tim played football for Iowa in college?â Cody asked.
âI didnât. We havenât really had a chance to talk about his life much with all the work we had to do to sort things out with the bank.â Susan took a bite of her spaghetti, closing her eyes and savoring it as she chewed.
Sheâd missed finding pleasure in eating. Thus far in her pregnancy sheâd been so nauseated that nothing sounded good at all, and if she did manage to find something appetizing to eat, it didnât stay down very long. She wondered if it was just a coincidence that all of those symptoms had started to fade when Tim arrived, or if him being here had made a difference in how she was feeling.
âWell, you should talk to him sometime. He had some really great stories about his glory days.â Cody twisted more spaghetti noodles around his fork before shoving another bite in his mouth. He slurped up the noodles that didnât quite make it in, and the sound made Adin giggle.
âCody...â Susan warned.
She didnât even have to speak the rest of her admonition before Cody said, âSorry, Mom.
